SMC is a mixture of polymer resin, inert fillers (calcium carbonate, talc or wollastonite), fibre reinforcement, catalysts, pigments, stabilizers, release agents, and thickeners. The glass reinforcement is between 10% and 60%, and the fiber length is slightly longer than that of the bulk molding compounds (BMC). SMC production method assures full integration of fibres and resins. Manufacturing of SMC is a continuous in-line process. Generally: Sheet molding compound made of fibre impregnated with resin paste or chopped fibre mat covered with polyhexene film on both sides.

How is the Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) Produced?
The SMC production process involves several key steps:
Preparation of Raw Materials:
Polyester resin or vinyl ester resin is mixed with chopped glass fibers, curing agents, and fillers to create a resin compound.
Sheet Formation:
The mixture is then compressed between two layers of film, forming a continuous sheet that is cut into manageable charges.
Maturation:
The sheet undergoes a maturation process to allow the resin to cure and increase its viscosity.
Molding:
The SMC sheets are placed into molds under heat and pressure, where the resin cures and the final part takes shape.
SMC and BMC molds require heating rather than cooling systems. The temperature of the mold is usually between 130 and 160. It is very important to keep the temperature of the mold and the exhaust gas when designing the mold. The mold is easier to fill, the product is not easy to be deformed, and the surface is better. Commonly used heating systems are steam, oil and electric heating rods.

If the first sample comes out satisfied, the mold finished. If not, we would improve or modify it until meeting customer's requirements.
