SMC International Standard Released

Recently, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) officially published the international standard ISO 8605: 2024 Fibre-reinforced plastics-Sheet moulding compound (SMC) -Requirements and specifications, The standard was revised by Beijing Glass and Steel Institute Composite Materials Co., LTD.

The revision lasted for 3 years, through a full investigation of the production and application of sheet molding plastics (SMC) products, new fiber types such as carbon fiber (including recycled carbon fiber) and basalt fiber, which have gradually increased in output and application in recent years, are added to the standard, and a more appropriate SMC naming rule is given. Added SMC shrink code and necessary SMC test performance. In the process of revision, China's expert representatives and their counterparts in various countries conducted several rounds of discussions, and the draft standard at each stage was voted for by 100% of ISO member states, finally completing the preparation of the standard. 

Beiyuan is the earliest research and production of SMC units in China, in 1975 began to carry out "sheet molding plastics (SMC) complete technology research", in 1976 independently designed and manufactured China's first SMC production unit. The successful revision of this standard is due to the technical accumulation of the North Glass Academy for decades.

The successful release of this standard provides technical support for the application of global sheet molding plastics (SMC) products and the development of the industry, drives China's sheet molding plastics (SMC) products and industries to go abroad and go international, shows China's positive role in the field of sheet molding plastics (SMC) technology, and contributes Chinese wisdom to the international standardization of composite materials.
